Terms of Use

Last updated 25 October 2026

By the way is a live audio show about the places, people and stories around you as you walk. By using the app you agree to these terms.

In short

  • Your first 15 minutes are free; then about $10 an hour, bought once.
  • A live walk runs about 25 minutes. You can start another.
  • The narrator is an AI voice. Entertaining, and sometimes wrong.
  • Keep your eyes on the street, not the phone.

The service

By the way produces a spoken show live, as you move. A narrator talks about what is around you: who lived here, what happened here, what is easy to walk past. The narrator is a generated voice, not a real person, and does not imitate any real person. It cannot hear you; the app has no microphone access.

The show is entertainment. It is not a guide to rely on for safety, directions, or legal, medical or historical accuracy. Facts are drawn from public sources and may be wrong, incomplete or out of date, and the narrator may get names, dates and details wrong.

Your safety

Keep your attention on the street, the traffic and the people around you. Do not handle the app while driving or cycling, and do not go anywhere unsafe, private or closed to the public because the show mentions it. Keep the volume at a level that lets you hear what is around you.

Listening time

Each phone gets 15 minutes of listening free, once. After that you buy listening time in packs (30 minutes, 1, 3 or 5 hours) through the App Store, at about $10 an hour; the App Store shows the exact price in your currency before you pay. Only time the show is actually playing is counted: pauses are not.

Packs are one-time purchases. Nothing renews, and your time does not expire. Use Restore purchases to bring bought time to a reinstalled app on the same Apple ID. Refunds are handled by Apple; time that Apple refunds is taken back.

A live walk runs for about 25 minutes, then the narrator closes the show; you can start another. There are also fair-use limits per phone and overall; when one is reached, the app says so.

Acceptable use

Do not try to extract, record for redistribution, resell or republish the show; reverse-engineer or overload the service; get around its limits; or use it in a way that harms others or breaks the law. We may suspend a device that abuses the service.

Content and sources

The show is for your personal, non-commercial listening. Facts come from public sources: Wikipedia and Wikivoyage (CC BY-SA), Wikidata and OpenPlaques (CC0), Wikimedia Commons, public heritage registers, Apple Maps, and OpenStreetMap. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License (ODbL). Our filtered table of OpenStreetMap features and our cache of OpenStreetMap building outlines are available on request under the same licence. Weather data from MET Norway (the Norwegian Meteorological Institute), CC BY 4.0. Street-level places from Apple Maps. Music and sounds are used under their licences.

Changes and ending the service

We may change the service or these terms. Material changes will be shown in the app before they apply. We may discontinue the service with reasonable notice.

No warranty and liability

The service is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential damages arising from its use. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer law that cannot be waived.

Law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Israel.
